Two Articles Assignment Due Friday April 3

Article 1:Crowdsourcing and Coronavirus Misinformation

This article goes into great detail about how easy it is to fall victim to misinformation, especially in this time where coronavirus is all that is being talked about. The misinformation starts with the headlines, expert David Rand says. Typically, news sources look to have a crazy eye-catching headline that will grab the attention of readers. These headlines are what sells a paper off of the newspaper stand, or gets a click on the paper's Internet website which all drives revenue back to the newspaper. Many are in the business to get money and influence, so headlines are usually crazy these days anyways. The worst of misinformation has been happening on Facebook and Twitter today. These sites have their Share Now and ReTweet options which make it effortless to spread information that is potentially misleading to the public. Very often there are posts about Donald Trump and Nancy Pelosi by their respective opponents that are outright false but are taken as common opinion on the web as people see these stories so often.  Rand says that social medias have the power to change the sentiment if they truly want to .

Article 2:Reducing Mistrust and Flattening the Curve

The second article is more honest about the issues in the media itself, and how Americans perceive the information that the media gives out. Many Americans do not trust this information, most likely because of the fake news movement and the vast discrepancies between the major news outlets. Food for thought: if news outlets were major and trustworthy, shouldn't the information be pretty close to the other news outlets? This article provides a solution to the media distrust in order to regain public support and trust. One thing the media can do is to repeat simple and clear messages often so that the audience can easily understand the information. This also makes it more difficult for facts to be twisted by the companies/journalists that report them. More solutions are to add charts which fire up the part of the brain that perceives images, this helps in the process of remembrance. More quotes and ideas from health professionals are also ideal in this health crisis. All in all, the best solution is to put less opinion rant pieces up such as Tucker Carlson, Rachel Maddow, and Chuck Todd on the air. They have an hour to have their say and influence on the American people, and it causes many of us to be misled about important issues.
